Adam Howell and Paul Hurt’s musical realisation of the Pulitzer prize-winning book ‘Angela’s Ashes’ by Frank McCourt, ANGELA’S ASHES, The Musical, has a special streaming event for Irish and New York audiences this September.
On September 9th 2021 at 7.30pm, the musical will be streamed from Dublin’s Olympia Theatre to Irish audiences. The show will also make its US premiere as the performance will be streamed to New York audiences by Irish Repertory Theatre on the same day for two weeks.
ANGELA’S ASHES, The Musical will also be available to view on demand in the UK and Ireland from 10 September through to 12 September. Tickets from €25 including booking fee are on sale now from Ticketmaster.
Starring Jacinta Whyte (Titanic) as “Angela” and Eoin Cannon (The Woman in White) as “Frank”, the musical has that rare gift of bringing an audience to tears in one minute, laughing out loud the next – if ever a musical could be said to embody the ‘roller coaster of emotion, then Angela’s Ashes is that musical. A haunting underscore with unforgettable tunes adds to the emotional impact and the humour of the story.
It is a remarkable story, told with a rare lyricism and a warm inimitable sense of humour as we follow Frank’s escapades and experiences in a Dickensian landscape peopled by a drunken father, helpless mother, pompous priests and bullying schoolmasters; money-lenders, dancing-teachers and charity workers, culminating in his escape from grinding poverty to the redemption of a new life in America.
The musical ran for a critically acclaimed tour with 4 and 5 star reviews in Ireland in 2017 and in 2019 and had its UK premiere at the reopening of the refurbished Ashcroft Playhouse in Croydon also in 2019.
Described by The New York Times as a “stunning memoir” back in 1996, the publication of Frank McCourt’s Angela’s Ashes caused a literary sensation. The book climbed quickly to the top of that newspaper’s Bestseller lists and remained there for nearly three years, selling 4 million copies in hardback alone.
McCourt’s memoir of growing up in the ‘Lanes of Limerick’ was followed by a 1999 Alan Parker film. It is now being retold in a vibrant and memorable piece of musical theatre.
