The adaptation of Rose Tremain’s acclaimed short story premieres at the 2026 Festival
We are delighted to announce that EXTRA GEOGRAPHY, adapted from a short story by our client Dame Rose Tremain, will world premiere at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, screening in the prestigious World Cinema Dramatic Competition.
Directed by Molly Manners in her feature film debut, EXTRA GEOGRAPHY is a sharply observed, funny and emotionally resonant coming-of-age drama. The screenplay is by Miriam Battye (SUCCESSION), with the film produced by Sarah Brocklehurst of Brock Media. The project was developed by Brock Media and Film4, with funding from Film4, the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding) and Screen Yorkshire, and worldwide sales are being handled by HanWay Films.
Set in an English girls’ boarding school, the film follows two teenage best friends, Flic and Minna, as they navigate the intensity of girlhood – friendship, ambition, curiosity and desire. Fiercely focused on their academic futures, they decide to undertake a summer project: to fall in love with the next person they see. What begins as a playful intellectual exercise soon becomes emotionally complex, testing both their friendship and their understanding of themselves as they grow up.
Adapted from Rose Tremain’s acclaimed short story, EXTRA GEOGRAPHY captures the emotional specificity and sharp humour that characterise her work, balancing intimacy with universality. As with much of Tremain’s writing, the story offers a precise and deeply felt portrait of a formative moment in young lives, where imagination, longing and identity collide.
The film introduces breakthrough talents Marni Duggan and Galaxie Clear, alongside Alice Englert (THE POWER OF THE DOG, TOP OF THE LAKE). Molly Manners, whose previous work includes the BAFTA-winning IN MY SKIN and the global Netflix success ONE DAY, brings her distinctive visual sensitivity and emotional intelligence to the material. Speaking about the Sundance premiere, Manners said: “I’m so excited that EXTRA GEOGRAPHY is premiering at Sundance 2026 – it feels like its perfect home. It’s been a huge privilege to make this film alongside such a brilliant team, and I can’t wait for the world to see it and to introduce the incredible young cast leading it.”
The Sundance premiere marks a significant moment in the screen life of Rose Tremain’s work. One of the UK’s most celebrated novelists and short story writers, her fiction continues to inspire filmmakers drawn to its psychological depth, emotional precision and rich characterisation. Alongside EXTRA GEOGRAPHY, Rose’s feature adaptation THE HOUSEKEEPER, adapted from her short story and forthcoming novel, is currently in pre-production, with Sir Richard Eyre attached to direct and filming scheduled for early 2026. Her novel THE GUSTAV SONATA is also in development as a feature film, with Rose writing the screenplay.
