Sayan is British Asian and a skilled writer for television, film and theatre and a dramaturg. She is also a composer and lyricist.
Sayan is currently writing BELONG, a new play commissioned by the National Theatre, NT Connections 2025-26. She is also working on GOOD GOLLY MISS MOLLY as Musical Director, at the New Vic Newcastle under Lyme in 2026 when the theatre revives its successful production for the theatre’s 40th anniversary celebrations.
In 2024 she joined the writing team for BBC One’s DOCTORS and her episode was broadcast in November that year. She is currently developing several new plays, and projects for adult and children’s television drama as she works on further screen work.
In December 2024 she was announced the winner of the Page Turner Screenplay Award TV Series for THURSDAY’S CHILD and her short film about girls growing up in honour culture BLAME HER, for the award winning charity Integrate UK, was released earlier that year. Sayan was a writer on attachment at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2022/23 and her first opera composition HER DAY with writer Vanessa Oakes supported by Arts Council England for the Coventry City of Culture Events was performed at HMV Empire in Coventry in March 2022. She wrote the libretto of a new Oratorio with composer Toby Young, for Armonico Consort IT TAKES A CITY as part of the City of Culture which premiered for the Jubilee celebrations at the Royal Albert Hall in May 2022. It received a nomination for an Ivors Classical Award for composition in community and participation. In 2021 Sayan worked as a composer on FAITH, an RSC project for the Coventry City of Culture performed in September through music, theatre, installation and ritual. It was a mass participation event in the city working with the diverse faith communities of Coventry exploring faith.
Sayan composed the music for 8 television monologues which transmitted on BBC 4/BBC iPlayer in 2022. The series explores poverty and is entitled SKINT (Hopscotch Films Ltd). Her play ANTIGONE’S SISTER was performed at Clifftown Theatre in Spring 2022 by E15 Acting School students and directed by Janet Steel.
Her children’s play STRIPEY HONEY … IS VERY YUMMY (Mashi Theatre) in collaboration with Big Imagination and Spark Arts toured the North West and venues in Nottingham and Leicestershire in 2019 and she wrote the TALES OF BIRBAL for children, also for Mashi Theatre which toured in 2017. As a theatre composer and lyricist, Sayan’s musical MAGGIE MAY (written with Bob Eaton) had a successful run and four and five star reviews at The Liverpool Royal Court in 2018. Also in 2018 she previewed a short extract from RED SEED, an opera in development, at Grimeborn (Arcola).
Sayan’s plays have been performed all over the country including MY BIG FAT COWPAT WEDDING which toured for Kali Theatre/Black Country Touring in 2014 and 2016 and at Soho Theatre Elsewhere in London.
