Catriona Clancy’s new play makes its Australian premiere at the Pip Theatre, Brisbane

We are delighted to share that FWA client Catriona Clancy’s play LADY MACBETH UNCUT will receive its Australian premiere this September, directed by Nicky Whichelow, Vox Productions,  at PIP Theatre, Brisbane and then plays at Sandgate Theatre, Queensland.

Following a successful UK debut at London’s Drayton Arms Theatre in autumn 2024, where it was accompanied by a panel on Women as Leaders with City Women Network, the production now travels to the southern hemisphere. In Australia, performances will again be paired with discussions, this time on Women in Power, underlining the play’s contemporary relevance and resonance.

LADY MACBETH UNCUT reimagines Shakespeare’s iconic tragedy with a bold feminist lens. Known for centuries as the “fiend-like queen”, Lady Macbeth has been defined by history as ruthless and manipulative. Clancy’s play seeks to redress this, inspired by the real Lady Macbeth (Gruoch) and told from her perspective. It explores her drive to seize control over her life and reframes her as a complex, powerful woman who challenges the limits placed upon her. The Witches, too, are given a reboot, repositioned as allies in a story about women pushing back against prejudice and structures designed to hold them back.

This new interpretation of one of Shakespeare’s most notorious women marks a milestone moment in Clancy’s career as a writer and performer. She began gaining recognition at a young age, winning the BBC National Radio Critic of the Year Award at just 16, and has since gone on to create a body of work across theatre, television and literature. Her first play, NO ISSUE, was staged at Theatre 503, and she has published work as part of SLAMinutes does Mental Health. Her next project is an adaptation of Ruth Gilligan’s NINE FOLDS MAKE A PAPER SWAN.

As an actor, Catriona’s stage credits include MRS WARREN’S PROFESSION (directed by Sir Peter Hall), PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, BLITHE SPIRIT and HUIS CLOS. She has also worked as a movement coach on the BBC series WOLFBLOOD and performed as a solo singer in AN EVENING WITH DON BLACK.

With LADY MACBETH UNCUTt now making its way to Australian audiences, the play continues to spark important conversations and reclaim space for women’s voices – past and present.
